Religious & Spiritual Life

The religious and spiritual life of The Ursuline School is rooted in the Catholic tradition, the Gospel, the inspiration of St. Angela Merici, the foundress of the Ursuline sisters, and the Ursuline tradition of "Serviam" - I will serve.

This is a welcoming place for students of all faith traditions to explore, enrich and engage in their spiritual life. The nourishment of the spiritual life of our students takes place in a variety of ways. Students are encouraged to actively participate in daily prayer, school wide liturgies, class liturgies, the Sacrament of Reconciliation during Advent and Lent, retreats, and service projects.

Prayer

Each day begins with a prayer proclaimed over the loudspeaker by a student. In addition, many teachers begin each class with a prayer. The Ursuline School Prayer is frequently recited. Prayer services are held weekly in the Chapel of St. Angela.

Liturgy

We celebrate liturgy as a school community throughout the year. Parents are always welcome to join. Please check the calendar for specific dates and times. Sensitivity is shown to students, faculty and staff of different faiths. Msgr. Dennis Keane is our Chaplain.

Eucharistic Ministers

Seniors who have actively participated in the Peer Ministry Program are invited to apply to be Special Ministers of the Eucharist at school liturgies.

Student Campus Ministers

Students have the opportunity to serve as student Campus Ministers during their sophomore, junior and senior years. All students are welcome to apply. Student Campus Ministers help serve The Ursuline School community. They help to plan school liturgies, read at Mass, plan prayers services, and are available to help others.

Peer Ministry Program

Peer ministry is a year-long experience available to juniors and seniors. Peer Ministers lead the retreats for students in grades 6-10.

Retreat Program

The retreat program is designed to invite students to examine their personal and active relationship with God. Retreats are also days of renewal. These experiences are planned by our student Peer Ministers for grades 6-10 and are planned by faculty or outside presenters for grades 11 and 12.

Students in grades 6 - 11 participate in a one-day retreat off campus. Students in grade 12 participate in an overnight retreat in the beginning of their senior year.

Sacraments - Reconciliation

The Sacrament of Reconciliation is celebrated twice a year, during Advent and Lent. All students and faculty are encouraged to participate during their scheduled Religious Studies class time.

Students arrange for Confirmation through their local parish. We do not offer sacramental preparation.

6th Grade Bible Ceremony

In the fall, 6th graders are presented with their own Bible in a special blessing ceremony held in the Ursuline Province Center Chapel, next to the school.

Ecumenical Prayer Service on Peace Day

Typically, each fall we invite ministers of the Jewish, Greek Orthodox, and Muslim traditions to join us for a prayer service around the Peace Pole, commemorating the United Nations International Day of Peace on September 21st.

Chapel of St. Angela

In 1986, the Chapel of St. Angela was built on the school grounds. It offers a space for daily prayer. Students and faculty frequently write in the Book of Prayer Intentions. Alumnae and parents are also invited to stop in and pray or write an intention.

St. Angela encouraged her daughters to grow into women of faith and service. Ursuline school students are encouraged to live out the mission - "to learn, to lead and to serve" - following St. Angela's counsels to do good for all on earth.

The Campus Ministry program helps build an awareness of the Ursuline charism in all aspects in the life of the school. It supports the Religious Studies Department to further instill faith in all areas of a student's life. Sr. Pat Schifini, OSU, is our Campus Minister.
