'Connections' program builds leadership and belonging

At The Ursuline School, leadership takes shape in everyday moments, through conversation, guidance, and the steady presence of students supporting one another. Ursuline Connections builds confidence, relationships, and a strong sense of belonging by pairing middle school students with upperclass mentors and ninth graders with seniors through small-group activities throughout the school year.

As part of the school's Personal Development program, Ursuline Connections supports students in grades 6–8 as they transition to Ursuline and develop self-awareness and interpersonal skills. Trained juniors and seniors lead regular small-group meetings, guiding discussions focused on connection, leadership, and growth.

"It creates space for them to develop a stronger sense of self."

"Ursuline Connections helps middle schoolers feel known and supported as they navigate a new environment," said Mrs. Carly D'Arpino, personal development coordinator. "It creates space for them to develop a stronger sense of self."

Ursuline Connections also gives upperclass students a meaningful leadership opportunity. Faculty select leaders through a thoughtful process, choosing students who demonstrate strong communication skills and a consistent sense of responsibility, qualities that shape each group's experience.

For Savannah Minter '27, the role centers on presence. "I value being someone others feel comfortable approaching," she said. "This experience has helped me grow as a communicator."

Carling Moore '27 views the role as an extension of Ursuline's sisterhood. "It’s another way to make sure everyone feels supported and connected," she said.

As the year progresses, structured meetings evolve into authentic relationships. Moore found that sitting alongside middle schoolers rather than standing at the front of the class opened the door to more meaningful conversations. "It shows that we’re all working together," she said.

Minter describes the dynamic in similar terms. "It's not about being in charge," she said. "It's about making others feel comfortable, valued, and heard."

Middle school students feel that impact as well. "It’s a place where I feel comfortable being myself, and it’s been fun getting to know some of the high school girls," one student shared.

Ursuline Connections stands out for its consistency. The school dedicates time within the schedule for these groups to meet, reinforcing its commitment to student wellness and personal growth. That shared growth ultimately defines the program's impact.

"Ursuline Connections reflects what makes our school community so strong," said D'Arpino. "We build confidence and connection that extend well beyond the classroom and strengthen the sisterhood that defines Ursuline."
