Embracing 2025–26: Advice for every Ursuline girl

At The Ursuline School, each September is a fresh start—an invitation to step into new opportunities, embrace time-honored traditions, and strengthen the bonds that unite our community. As the 2025–26 academic year begins, President Dr. Colleen Melnyk P'18 reflects on what it means to make the most of the Ursuline experience—for both students and families.

From the very first day of classes, Ursuline girls become part of something much larger than themselves. Since 1897, thousands of alumnae have carried the school's mission into the world, grounded in faith, leadership, and service. This living legacy is visible in the traditions that mark the year: Ring Day, retreats, and the celebration of St. Angela Merici. "Our traditions remind every student that she is never alone—she is part of a community that spans generations," says Melnyk. These moments connect today's students to more than 8,000 alumnae worldwide, affirming that each girl belongs to a sisterhood that spans generations.

But the Ursuline journey is more than rituals and ceremonies—it is an education designed to challenge and inspire. The curriculum is built to stretch minds, nurture curiosity, and encourage resilience. Dr. Melnyk points out that "Difficult assignments and bold questions aren't obstacles, they are opportunities for growth." With dedicated teachers and supportive families walking alongside them, students learn to embrace risk, push beyond comfort zones, and discover just how much they are capable of achieving.

Leadership, too, takes center stage at Ursuline. Whether it is a sixth grader trying out for a new activity, a junior mentoring her peers, or a senior leading a club, true leadership is measured not by titles, but by the courage and compassion it inspires. "Leadership at Ursuline is about lifting others up," Dr. Melnyk emphasizes. "It’s about empathy, integrity, and modeling the values of St. Angela Merici."

Much of that growth happens outside the classroom. Athletics, the arts, clubs, and service opportunities provide space for students to uncover hidden talents, form lasting friendships, and experience the joy of giving back through Serviam. These experiences shape well-rounded young women who lead with both confidence and heart.

"Ursuline has always been about empowering young women to dream big, work hard, and lead with heart."

Throughout all of this, Ursuline's Core Values and faith remain central. Reflection, prayer, and spiritual development are woven into daily life, grounding students with strength and clarity. These roots not only guide them during their years at Ursuline but continue to shape their lives long after graduation. "Ursuline has always been about empowering young women to dream big, work hard, and lead with heart," says Melnyk.

With the support of their families, teachers, and an alumnae network that spans the globe, Ursuline students have everything they need to make this school year a remarkable one.
