Multi-tasking co-editors raise the bar on journalism at Ursuline

For the past year, seniors Georgina G and Theresa M have been the driving force behind Unison, skillfully upholding the legacy of Ursuline’s student newsletter while elevating it to new heights. Their ability to juggle rigorous academic demands, extracurricular commitments, and the fast-paced world of student journalism is nothing short of exceptional. As dedicated co-editors, they have worked together to ensure each issue is a beacon of journalistic integrity, keeping the school community informed and engaged.

With the dedicated guidance of faculty moderators, Ms. Madeline Hurwitz and Mrs. Meg LaBella ‘83, Gamble and Montana have successfully managed deadlines and fostered a culture that empowers student voices. Their leadership and passion for storytelling have set a new standard for the publication. It’s time to ‘Take 5’ with these talented co-editors and learn more about their path to leading a standout student publication.

1) What inspired you to join Unison?

Georgina: I have always loved writing, so Unison was a great outlet for my passion. It was also a great way for me to experience the events going on at Ursuline in a different way.

Theresa: I always loved writing, but I had few opportunities to showcase my writing abilities in grade school. I came to Ursuline as a freshman when many COVID restrictions were still in place, and it was difficult to integrate into the TUS community. I joined Unison as a way to meet new people and showcase my skills as a writer.

2) What has been your biggest challenge as a co-editor, and how did you overcome it?

Georgina: My biggest challenge was managing tight deadlines while balancing college decisions, homework, and other activities. I overcame this by maintaining good communication with Theresa, as we have been able to divide editing evenly between each other to prevent being overwhelmed.

Theresa: I have been very lucky this year. Georgina and I work very well together, and we have a dedicated group of talented student writers. The only challenges we have faced are logistical issues. For the second issue in particular, the turnaround time was very quick, and we had to edit about a dozen articles within less than two days. Good old-fashioned hard work and perseverance did wonders in this instance.

3) What is your greatest takeaway from your experience leading Unison this year?

Georgina: Embracing people's different writing styles and taking into account everyone's strengths when it came to forming the whole paper.

Theresa: I very much enjoy editing and would like to continue with journalism-related activities in college and possibly beyond.

4) How has your involvement with Unison prepared you for college?

Georgina: Unison gave me stronger leadership skills and a better idea of what it is like to be involved in journalism. I enjoyed my time as a writer and co-editor and will definitely pursue being involved in my college newspaper.

Theresa: While I am not officially committed to any specific college yet, I am positive that my four years of writing and later editing for Unison have given me the leadership experience and writing skills necessary for success. From my Unison experience, I have learned not only to stay true to my writing style but also how to make cuts and difficult decisions. Although I learned this in the context of the newspaper, I firmly believe that these skills will be valuable assets to my collegiate classes and extracurricular activities.

5) Any advice for students interested in joining Unison next year?

Georgina: My advice would be to embrace collaboration with your peers and be open to learning from others. Don't be afraid to make a mistake or ask a question!

Theresa: You do not have to be a "star writer" to join Unison. Even if writing is not your strong suit or even if it is not an activity you particularly enjoy, everyone has something to contribute to Unison.
