Ninth graders explore sustainability at Mystic Seaport Museum

Ninth-grade students traveled to Mystic Seaport Museum on May 13, 2026, for a day of hands-on learning focused on sustainability, maritime culture, and coastal life.

Students explored the Charles W. Morgan, the world's last surviving wooden whaling ship, and toured the museum's historic cordage factory to learn how rope was once produced for maritime use.

The visit also included an exhibit featuring detailed Lego recreations of historic shipwrecks, including the Titanic, as well as opportunities to examine daily life in a New England seaside village.

Throughout the trip, students considered how human relationships with the ocean have changed over time. By comparing the whaling industry with modern oyster harvesting and lobster trapping, students gained a deeper understanding of sustainability and evolving environmental practices.
