Ursuline Global Scholars lead and learn at Human Rights Student Institute

Students in Ursuline’s Global Scholars Program recently attended the annual Human Rights Student Institute at Iona University, presented by the Holocaust and Human Rights Education Center. They joined peers from more than 40 area high schools for a day focused on human rights, advocacy, and youth leadership.

Through workshops and discussions, students examined contemporary human rights issues and explored how young people can confront prejudice and discrimination in their communities. Three junior Global Scholars candidates represented Ursuline by researching, presenting, and facilitating two breakout sessions on women’s rights in Afghanistan.

Holocaust survivor Alfred “Fred” Schoenfeld delivered the keynote address, sharing his experience as a young boy in Slovakia during World War II. His story prompted a standing ovation and reinforced a powerful message: students must recognize injustice and choose to act. He urged today’s generation to stand up to antisemitism and to remain vigilant when history shows signs of repeating itself.

The institute reflects the mission of Ursuline’s Global Scholars Program, which challenges students to think critically, engage globally, and lead with purpose.
