An artful mix of music and dance set an inspiring tone for Ursuline’s Black History Month assembly on February 25, 2025. Black Essence Club co-presidents Imani Harris ‘26 and Ilyasah Odindo ‘26 skillfully led the program with enthusiastic support from the Honorable Donna Edwards ’75, a founding member of the club who now serves on Ursuline’s Board of Trustees.
The program began with a stirring rendition of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” by the Ursuline Choir, followed by a captivating dance performance to Beyonce’s “Freedom” by four talented dancers and Black Essence Club members, Imani Harris ‘26, Ilyasah Odindo ‘26, Corinne Ross ‘25, and Nadia Fowlkes ‘25.
Later, Harris and Odindo, together with President Dr. Colleen Melnyk, welcomed three special guest panelists: Michelle A. Nicholas, award-winning leader, founder, and CEO of The NICO Consulting; Nancy Harvey, Chief Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer at the New York Power Authority, and the Honorable Donna Edwards ’75, a retired federal administrative judge with a distinguished law career spanning four decades.
As an all-girls school, we take pride in our legacy of empowerment, resilience, and excellence. Today’s program is a testament to that commitment.”

In welcoming the all-school audience of students, faculty, staff, and special guests, Dr. Melnyk noted, “We gather to honor the profound contributions of African-American women in our community, particularly in law, public service, and nonprofit organizations. As an all-girls school, we take pride in our legacy of empowerment, resilience, and excellence. Today’s program is a testament to that commitment.”
The presentation that followed was not only inspiring but also deeply informative. It included stories of triumphs, setbacks, and resiliency grounded in the strength of family and shared values. Special guests emphasized the importance of education, perseverance, and hard work in achieving leadership roles. Their stories served as powerful reminders that dedication can transform lives and communities.
Nicholas encouraged students to embrace their own journeys, reminding them that while they may be the first to achieve something, they will not be the last. “Each of us paves the way for those who follow,” she said, underscoring the importance of lifting other women up along the journey.

In reflecting on the event, Principal Theresa Napoli shared that the presentation was a testament to the values and mission of The Ursuline School. “Strong, smart, and bold are words used to describe St. Angela in the 1500s. Those same words apply to today’s Ursuline girl.”
