Celebration of Culture showcases language learning in action

The Ursuline School's Celebration of Culture highlights the strength of its World Language program, where students study Italian, Spanish, and Latin while building an understanding of global cultures. Each spring, Italian 3 students connect language study with lived experience through a project that has become a highly anticipated spring tradition.

Students step into the role of historians, interviewing family members and friends about their journeys as immigrants to the United States. They then present each story in Italian, applying their language skills in a meaningful context.

"We were asked to interview someone about their experience coming to the United States and then share their story in Italian," said one Italian 3 student. "It challenged us to really listen and then communicate something personal in another language."

Students examined each story more closely and gained a deeper understanding of the individuals they interviewed.

"This experience allows our students to use language in a meaningful, real-world context and deepens their understanding of culture and its connection to our school  community."

The project culminated on April 15 with a special on-campus event, where interviewees joined the class to speak with students and bring dishes that reflected their background. The food added another dimension to the experience, helping students engage more fully and connect each story to culture.

"The food was amazing," said one Italian 3 student. "It definitely helps connect language to real lives and traditions."

"It’s become something we all look forward to," said Mrs. Francesca LaGumina, World Language department chair. "This experience allows our students to use language in a meaningful, real-world context and deepens their understanding of culture and its connection to our school  community."

Now an annual spring tradition, the Celebration of Culture brings students, families, and guests together in an experience that extends beyond the classroom and connects learning at school with life at home.
