A talented group of student singers and dancers, along with a dedicated tech crew of classmates, brought a bit of Broadway to North Avenue on the first weekend of February 2024 with Ursuline's 6th Annual Charity Cabaret. The cast entertained an enthusiastic crowd across three performances while raising funds for the non-profit Sanctuary for Families, New York's leading service provider and advocate for victims of domestic abuse and related forms of gender violence.
Student auditions began in November, with rehearsals starting just after Thanksgiving. Over two months, the cast and crew worked hard to learn new music, choreography, and staging.
Dedication and collaboration are keys to any successful production. This year's student-directed musical revue was a collaborative effort envisioned by juniors Cameron Caie '25 (choreography), Madeleine Cockburn '25 (vocals), Annika Pitawala '25 (programs and costumes), and Carly Tauber '25 (staging). Performing Arts teachers, Mr. Sylvain Falipou-Karkari and Ms. Kelly Gentry, gave guidance on blocking, lighting, and music, helping to keep the production on track.
A dynamic and engaging group of student performers from grades 7-12 brought the show to life. Highlights included show-shopping classics from some of Broadway's biggest hits, such as, "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee," "Frozen," "Chicago," "Waitress," "A Chorus Line," "Rent," and "Little Shop of Horrors," among others.
The three performances raised more than $2,200 for Sanctuary for Families. Congratulations to all the participants who shared their talents with a grateful audience and made a meaningful difference for those in need through this inspiring event! Ms. Gentry notes, "The directors have already started discussing ideas for next year, and will begin in earnest come September."
