Fairness in high school athletics should not be up for debate

For nearly 50 years, The Ursuline School has competed in Section 1 athletics and provided student-athletes with opportunities to grow through teamwork, discipline, and competition. Since joining in 1977, Ursuline has remained a member in good standing and upheld the values that define high school sports.

Today, those opportunities face uncertainty.

A proposal under consideration in Section 1 would limit postseason access for some schools, including Ursuline. No final vote has taken place, and Section 1 has not removed any schools. Still, the possibility of restricted postseason play raises a fundamental question: What does fairness look like in high school athletics?

At its core, this conversation is about fairness. Fairness does not guarantee outcomes. It guarantees opportunity. Removing that opportunity from an entire group of students does not level the playing field. It narrows it.

At Ursuline, the answer begins with students.

Our student-athletes train with purpose. Like other students across Section 1, they work toward the opportunity to compete fully, including in postseason play. They balance demanding academic schedules with practices, games, and travel. They support their teammates and represent their school with pride.

They do not work any less. They should not receive any less.

Some have described schools like Ursuline as "schools without borders." We embrace that identity.

Our students come from many diverse communities and backgrounds. They share a commitment to an Ursuline education rooted in a values-based environment that emphasizes integrity, accountability, and respect for others. Athletics is one part of that broader experience, grounded in our mission and Core Values.

We also want to be clear: Ursuline does not recruit athletes or offer incentives for athletic participation. Students choose Ursuline for its academic excellence, values-based learning environment, and strong legacy of sisterhood.

This moment calls for more than procedural decisions. It calls for reflection.

Pope Leo XIV has underscored that justice, at its core, depends on respect for human dignity and equality. That principle applies here.

High school athletics should expand opportunity, not limit it. These programs should reflect a commitment to fairness and the belief that students who put in the work deserve the chance to compete fully.

Postseason play is not an extra. It is part of the experience that student-athletes work toward all season. It is where teams test themselves, where preparation meets opportunity, and where effort reaches its fullest expression.

Limiting that opportunity changes the experience itself.

We recognize the complexity of this issue and respect the process underway. But fairness in high school athletics should not be up for debate.

At Ursuline, we will continue to advocate for our student-athletes with clarity, integrity, and purpose. Because when students put in the work, the opportunity to compete should not be in question. It should be the standard.
