She dominated the sport at Ursuline, dazzled at Notre Dame—and now Sonia Citron ’21 is top three in the WNBA Draft. The 21-year-old Eastchester native and proud alumna of The Ursuline School was selected third overall by the Washington Mystics in the 2025 WNBA Draft, held on April 14 in Manhattan. With her family by her side—parents Bill and Yolanda, brother Will, and boyfriend Marist Liufau, a former Notre Dame linebacker now with the Dallas Cowboys—Citron stood as one of just 16 players invited to the draft, ready to embrace the next chapter in a basketball journey that began right here at Ursuline.
Before she lit up the court at Notre Dame and made her mark in the national spotlight, Citron built her foundation in Ursuline’s Tully Family Auditorium-Gymnasium, where her tireless work ethic, sharp basketball IQ, and love for the game took shape. She leaves a legacy as Ursuline’s all-time leading scorer (2,243 points) and rebounder (1,192).
Under the guidance of longtime Varsity Coach Beth Wooters ’80, Citron led the Koalas to the 2020 Section 1 Class AA title and capped off her high school career on an incredible 38-game win streak. With Coach Wooters’ steady leadership and Citron’s relentless drive, the team thrived. Citron’s talent and determination earned her national and state recognition, including honors as a 2021 McDonald’s All-American, two-time Gatorade New York State Player of the Year, and Lohud Westchester Player of the Year.
I am thrilled for Sonia. After an amazing college career at Notre Dame, Sonia begins her new chapter in the WNBA. Having been a small part of her journey from Ursuline to this point, I am just so proud of her and wish her all the best."

At Notre Dame, Citron continued to rise. Her name is now etched across the program’s record books as the only player in school history to record 1,700 points, 700 rebounds, and 300 assists. She wrapped up her collegiate career with 1,774 points (11th all-time), 173 three-pointers (8th), and a career free-throw percentage of 84.3% (5th), including a single-season record 91.2% from the line as a senior.
Now, the Washington Mystics—coming off a 14-26 season and holding three of the first six picks in this year’s draft—look to Citron to bring immediate impact and energy to the court. With her versatility, leadership, and calm under pressure, she’s poised to make a smooth transition to the professional level.
Citron’s journey from the halls of Ursuline to the national stage is a testament to years of hard work and the unshakable support of her community. She becomes the first Westchester player selected in the WNBA Draft since Saniya Chong (Ossining) in 2017, and her story will no doubt inspire the next generation of Koalas who dare to dream big.
As the WNBA season tips off on May 16, all eyes will be on Citron—and those who’ve watched her grow. This Koala standout is just getting started.
