Grade 8 Retreat centers on finding God

With a focus on supporting students as they navigate transitions and prepare for changes, the 8th-grade retreat held on Wednesday, October 16, began with a reflection on how change can be both challenging and rewarding. Through scripture readings and group discussions, 8th graders could connect and share their experiences. As Dr. Gelpi, Director of Mission and Formation, explains, "We wanted to give the girls the opportunity to reflect on their experiences of change as having the potential of being graced moments of growth. We want them to broaden their perspective to see transition and change as an opportunity to experience God active in their lives."

Led by Dr.Gelpi, Ms. Sommovigo-Brown, and Peer Ministers, students were encouraged to embrace changes and transitions with faith and trust in God's plan. One of the highlights of the day was the meditation session led by Dr. Gelpi, which allowed students to quiet their minds and connect with their inner selves. The peaceful atmosphere created during this time of reflection helped students to focus on their spiritual journey and find a sense of peace amidst the busyness of daily life.

Another powerful activity was the trust walk, where students had to rely on their peers to guide them. This exercise strengthened their bonds with each other and reinforced the importance of trust and communication in building meaningful relationships.

Students wrote heartfelt cards to those battling breast cancer, offering words of encouragement and support. This act of kindness not only brought a sense of community to the retreat but also served as a reminder of the importance of compassion and empathy in our daily lives.

As the day came to a close, students left the retreat feeling inspired and rejuvenated, ready to take on the challenges and opportunities that lay ahead. The experience served as a catalyst for personal and spiritual growth, setting the stage for a transformative year ahead.

Overall, the 8th-grade retreat was a meaningful experience that brought students closer together and reinforced their connection to God and each other. By focusing on life's transitions and finding God in quiet moments, students were able to deepen their faith and strengthen their spiritual foundation, leaving a lasting impact on all who participated. The day was a beautiful blend of deep conversations and joyful moments, setting the tone for a year of spiritual and personal growth.

We wanted to give the girls the opportunity to reflect on their experiences of change as having the potential of being graced moments of growth. We want them to broaden their perspective to see transition and change as an opportunity to experience God active in their lives."

- Dr. David Gelpi P '09, Director of Mission and Formation

Grade-level retreats at Ursuline serve as an opportunity for renewal where students are invited to examine their relationship with God. All students may participate in at least one retreat experience each year.
