History-making O'Sullivan advances to ISEF

Aine O’Sullivan '25 has made school history by securing first place in the Medicine and Health Sciences category at the prestigious Regeneron Westchester Science and Engineering Fair (WESEF). Her groundbreaking research in cancer science earned her a coveted spot at the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) 2025, which will be held in Columbus, Ohio, at the Greater Columbus Convention Center from May 10-16, 2025.

This remarkable achievement marks the first time a student from The Ursuline School has received first-place honors in any WESEF category. Even more notably, O’Sullivan will be the first student from Ursuline to represent the school on a global stage, joining the world’s brightest young scientists at ISEF, the largest international pre-college science competition.

On April 1, she was presented with a Certificate of Achievement from the Office of the Westchester County Executive during the WESEF Finalists' Ceremony at Regeneron, where she shared remarks about her research.

My teachers taught me all about the scientific process and career paths in STEM, then used their connections to provide me with tremendous opportunities. They've helped me take control of my future."

O’Sullivan’s innovative work in cancer research impressed the panel of judges and also showcased Ursuline’s dedication to fostering scientific excellence. The school’s three-year Science Research honors program, in which O’Sullivan has participated since her sophomore year, has played a pivotal role in nurturing her passion and talent for scientific research.

Her deep interest in cancer research was further solidified during a pre-college summer program at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 2023, where she researched bone cancer. "It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," says O'Sullivan. "The exposure and experience I’ve gained, the people I‘ve met… it’s just been invaluable!" That experience, combined with her dedication and academic curiosity, led to her award-winning project.

Her accomplishments are a testament to both her hard work and the supportive environment at The Ursuline School, which continues to inspire young women to achieve excellence not only in academics but also in leadership, STEM, and innovation. Following her graduation this May, O’Sullivan plans to major in Biology on the pre-med track and pursue a career in medicine and scientific research.
