Each spring, May Crowning at The Ursuline School reminds us that while generations change, our faith, values, and devotion to Mary remain constant. On May 28, 2025, our middle school students gathered to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary through a beautiful prayer service that united faith, tradition, and community. The ceremony, which mirrors those of generations past, is a powerful reminder of the strength and beauty of Ursuline’s faith-based traditions.
Set against the crystal clear backdrop of our picturesque campus, students in grades 6 through 8 assembled on the JB Commons for the annual celebration. A highlight of the ceremony was the student reflections, which offered heartfelt insights into Mary’s significance in their lives. These personal testimonies set a meaningful tone for the morning. Students also led a litany to the Blessed Virgin Mary and prayed a decade of the rosary.
Dr. David Gelpi P’09, director of mission and formation, reflects, "Each May Crowning at The Ursuline School is a reminder that while time moves forward, our devotion to Mary and the values rooted in our faith remain steadfast. Through prayer, reflection, and tradition, our students carry forward a legacy of grace, unity, and spiritual strength."

In keeping with tradition, the oldest student in the middle school had the special honor of placing a floral crown upon the statue of the Blessed Mother. This practice honors Mary’s place in salvation history and expresses gratitude for her role in bringing Jesus into the world. The floral crown is not only a symbol of Mary’s queenship but also of new life, hope, and the arrival of springtime. It reflects Mary’s spiritual motherhood and her example as the perfect follower of Christ.
Ursuline’s annual May Crowning service mirrors those of generations past. It remains a living tradition that connects today’s students with the many Ursuline women who have come before them. With every prayer offered, students reaffirm their commitment to Ursuline’s deeply rooted Catholic identity and its enduring devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary.
