On May 30, 2025, the Ursuline community said goodbye to a beloved sister, teacher, chaplain, and friend, Sr. Anna (Annie) Dumas, OSU, who passed away peacefully at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx, NY, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Her life was marked by compassion, humor, resilience, and an unwavering dedication to service, qualities that defined her both in and out of the classroom.
Born on April 11, 1948, in Malone, NY, to Ruth and Kenneth Dumas, Sr. Annie grew up in a loving family and was one of nine siblings. She is survived by her siblings—Shirley, Gary, Donald, Thomas, Marie, Connie, Mary, and Pauline, and their extended families, as well as her devoted Ursuline Sisters.
Sr. Annie’s path to religious life was shaped by a lifetime of teaching and caring for others. A graduate of the State University of New York at Plattsburgh, she spent many years teaching in Maryland, New York, and Vermont before entering The Ursuline School community in 2005. She professed her final vows on August 11, 2013, in a joyful celebration at the Ursuline Provincialate chapel, where she publicly said her eternal “Yes” to God, a moment that deeply reflected her character and faith.
Her ministry reached from the classrooms of Serviam Academy in Wilmington, DE, to mission service in Georgetown, Guyana, and most memorably, to The Ursuline School in New Rochelle. Whether teaching math in the RLD Department or serving as a team chaplain for the Ursuline basketball program, Sr. Annie brought light, laughter, and spiritual wisdom to every encounter. She was especially beloved for the heartfelt blessings she offered before games, encouraging athletes to play with heart and grace.
Sr. Annie’s compassion extended beyond school walls. She served the broader community through volunteer work at the Delaware Food Bank and the New Rochelle Public Library. In her own Ursuline community at 1338 North Avenue, she was a faithful and joy-filled presence, always offering a helping hand and a warm smile.
Alumnae will remember Sr. Annie for her patience as a tutor, her support as a chaplain, and her sense of humor. Her presence at the celebration of Coach Beth Wooters’ 700th win earlier this year, where she gave a heartfelt blessing and reconnected with former students, was a poignant moment, a testament to her enduring impact on the school community.
On May 30, 2025, the chapel at the Ursuline Provincialate overflowed with students, colleagues, and friends from across the years who came to honor her memory. It was a powerful reminder of the lives she touched, the faith she shared, and the legacy she leaves behind.
Sr. Annie Dumas lived a life grounded in the Ursuline motto, Serviam—“I will serve.” Her spirit lives on in the countless lives she uplifted with her gentle strength and joyful presence.
May she rest in God’s eternal peace.
