South African trip provides worldview, Ursuline style
The Ursuline School is going places and transforming how students see themselves and the world. A recent trip to Brescia House in South Africa brought Ursuline students face-to-face with sisters on the other side of the globe. The trip, part of Ursuline's global education initiative, allowed interested students to see what it's like to attend an Ursuline school in another part of the world, live and learn among fellow Ursuline students, and immerse themselves in a new culture while developing strong bonds with new Ursuline “sisters.”
The experience was transformative for the senior Aileen Farrelly. “I don’t want to learn about culture from TikTok,” she says. “This program opened my eyes. You can’t really understand the challenges others face unless you’re with them in person.” Farrelly is grateful for the experience and the bonds of sisterhood she has gained. ”Being able to go to a school so far away taught me so much," she explains. "I didn't really understand 'sisterhood' til now. We could relate to each other in a lot of ways. Having a friend in South Africa, who is like a sister, is really cool."

The South African safari was a highlight for fellow traveler, sophomore Nora Cronin. “It was inspiring,” says Cronin, who is looking to explore service leadership opportunities at Ursuline. “I want to work with other students to help prevent poaching.” She plans to start a new club that centers on wildlife issues and includes a service component. “Service leadership is such a driving force in our community,” says Cronin. “I’d like to help raise awareness about poaching and conservation.”

These unique learning experiences help students to live out our school mission and core values while preparing them to succeed in an increasingly interconnected world. Ursuline students are gaining multicultural perspectives, developing new friendships, and building self-confidence, Ursuline style.
