TUSMUNC VIII welcomes 153 delegates for a day of global problem-solving

The Ursuline School hosted its eighth annual Model United Nations conference, TUSMUNC VIII, on Saturday, Nov. 15. Led by secretaries-general Mary Claire Sutterlin ’26 and Justine Dolan ’26, the opening ceremony welcomed 153 delegates from nine schools. Middle and high school students traveled from Central Jersey College Prep, Ethical Culture Fieldston, the Masters School, Penn United, Nanuet Senior High School, Riverdale Kingsbridge Academy, the Elisabeth Morrow School, Deer Park High School, and St. John’s Prep.

An all-crisis learning conference, TUSMUNC VIII, asked delegates to launch immediately into fast-paced committee work. Over the course of the day, students tackled eight crisis scenarios, including imaginative universes such as “Star Wars” and “Monsters, Inc.” as well as pivotal historical moments like the French Revolution and the sinking of the Titanic. Each committee challenged students to think critically, collaborate effectively, and respond creatively under pressure.

The Ad Hoc Committee, reserved for the most experienced delegates, added an unexpected twist: just 20 minutes to prepare for a surprise topic, WNBA: The Role of Women’s Basketball. Delegates rose to the challenge, demonstrating agility, poise, and strict adherence to parliamentary procedure. Meanwhile, the press corps worked throughout the day, reporting on committee developments and keeping delegates informed.

In the spirit of Serviam, Ursuline selected Children Incorporated as its conference charity, raising funds to support essential resources for children around the world. The event also benefited from the generosity and coordination of the Friends of MUN, whose behind-the-scenes support helped ensure a smooth experience for all attendees.

Under the guidance of Mrs. Stephanie Doherty, Ursuline’s Model UN team delivered a conference marked by intellectual rigor, warm hospitality, and confident student leadership. Together, these students showed how Model UN strengthens our community, inspiring creativity, sharpening problem-solving skills, and building the collaborative, purpose-driven leadership we hope to see in every Ursuline graduate.
