Ursuline’s Model UN transforms into hub of leadership and learning

Ursuline’s Model United Nations (MUN) club has transformed into one of the school's most dynamic and sought-after programs. What began as a modest group of 15 students has grown into a confident, 50-member team whose enthusiasm for diplomacy and debate is matched only by their sense of purpose and pride.

Model UN simulates the United Nations General Assembly, allowing students to step into the roles of global delegates, research pressing international issues, and debate real-world solutions. But at Ursuline, the experience extends far beyond the classroom. It’s a space where students from every grade level learn to lead, collaborate, and support one another—embodying the spirit of Serviam and the school’s deep commitment to leadership and learning.

Under the guidance of Moderator Stephanie Doherty, Ursuline’s annual conference, TUSMUNC, has seen remarkable growth. Attendance has surged from 38 delegates at TUSMUNC III to an impressive 166 delegates at this year’s TUSMUNC VIII, affectionately dubbed “The Great 8.” The turnout reflects the program’s strong reputation and reach. Schools from across the tri-state area—including The Masters School, Central Jersey College Prep, Ethical Culture Fieldston, Nanuet High School, and others—look forward to joining The Ursuline School community each fall.

"You can’t imagine the joy it brings to see their hard work pay off.”

“This is a testament to the hard work and dedication of this beautiful team,” said Mrs. Stephanie Doherty. “I am so grateful for the opportunity to have inherited this team from former moderator Mrs. Shernaz Patel. You can’t imagine the joy it brings to see their hard work pay off.”

That pride extends well beyond conference numbers. This fall, 10 members of the team represented Ursuline at the RoarMUNC Conference at Riverdale Kingsbridge Academy, earning several top honors:

  • Justine Dolan ’26 – Best Collaborator in Crisis

  • Nicole Halaseh ’27 – Outstanding Delegate (World Health Organization)

  • Jane Loveley ’27 – Best Delegate in Crisis (SUE)

The day also marked the first conference appearance for Antonietta Cuono ’30, symbolizing the club’s growing reach and inclusive mentorship across grade levels.

Ursuline’s MUN program continues to prepare students for success—not just as debaters, but as articulate, compassionate, and globally aware leaders. Through teamwork, sisterhood, and a shared drive to make an impact, these “little club that could” delegates have built something extraordinary.
