Sarah Kelly is a powerhouse in the world of nonprofit fundraising and institutional development, bringing over 25 years of experience to her new role at the Ursuline School. Let’s ‘Take 5’ with Ms. Kelly and learn what makes this dynamic professional tick.
1. What drew you to pursue a career in fundraising?
After graduating from Purchase College with a degree in philosophy, I often faced the question, “What will you do with that degree?” At the time, I wasn’t sure, but the skills I developed as a philosophy student —conducting research, writing persuasively, and making a compelling case for an idea or position —prepared me for a career I hadn't yet imagined: professional fundraising.
A year after graduation, I entered the fundraising field, and over the past 25 years, I have had the privilege of working with a diverse range of nonprofit organizations in the cultural, social service, and education sectors. The commitment of nonprofit professionals and the generosity of engaged donors continuously inspire me, fueling my passion for this work.
2. Why work in education?
Throughout my career, I have remained connected to education, a field I have always found energizing and full of possibility. There is something special about being part of an educational community—an environment where growth, discovery, and new ideas are constantly encouraged.
3. You’ve had a lot of experience working in higher education. What attracted you to The Ursuline School?
I was drawn to Ursuline because its mission of nurturing the intellectual, personal, and spiritual development of young women deeply resonates with me. I am passionate about helping young women find their unique voices and contribute meaningfully to the world, and I can think of no better place to do that than at Ursuline.
4. What are your plans for Christmas?
I will spend Christmas Eve with my siblings and our families in the Rockaways, followed by Christmas Day with my own family. This year, we will celebrate our first Christmas in our new home in Milford, CT, and if the weather permits, we will start a new tradition of walking on the beach on Christmas day.
5. Looking ahead, what excites you about semester two at Ursuline?
I’m excited to help plan the 20th anniversary of the Koala Sweepstakes and Auction on March 22. This year, we will honor Joyce Tiangco Biolsi, whose vision and dedication were integral to creating this annual event.
