World Languages

The World Languages Department seeks to enable students to communicate and express themselves effectively and proficiently in their chosen language in the areas of speaking, reading, listening and writing.

We seek to inspire our students to celebrate the richness of the diversity of our community and of the wider world, and to instill a deep respect and understanding of the culture they have chosen to study.

In teaching our students the great value of learning other languages and cultures, we strive to prepare them to become productive and full-fledged members of the multicultural global community.

We offer Spanish, Italian, as well as French Accelerated, which is offered to grades 11 and 12, in addition to the core language they have selected to fulfill their language requirement. These courses are aligned with the Standards for Foreign Language Learning in the 21st Century. Students are required to complete 3 years in the same language at the high school level. Students may choose one of the World Languages or Latin. Many students choose to take additional language courses, or pursue courses in two different languages.

We increasingly integrate technology into our instruction: video conferencing, communication and presentation tools, and varied Web tools, such as backchanneling, Quizlet, VoiceThread, DuoLingo and YouTube.

Our Global Education & Serviam Program enhances language study. A variety of travel opportunities and language immersion experiences are offered and are popular among our Ursuline students.
