Each year the International Day of Peace is observed around the world on September 21. The United Nations has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples. This year, the UN declared the theme for the day to be, “Recovering better for an equitable and sustainable world.”
We marked the 2021 International Day of Peace by gathering around our Peace Pole and holding a special ecumenical prayer service. Seminarian Karmesha K. Peake of Union Theological Seminary shared a powerful reflection on our Scripture reading. Then prayers from many faith traditions were proclaimed by students and our guests, Fr. Nicholas Anctil of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church and Sr. Pat Schifini, OSU. We thank all three honored guests for sharing the morning with us.

Students in our art classes created "Pinwheels for Peace" which were planted in front of the school. Pinwheels for Peace is an art installation project started by two Art teachers in Coconut Creek, Florida, as a way for students to express their feelings about what's going on in the world and in their lives. As far as we know, Ursuline was the first school in New Rochelle to adopt this project and this was the 16th year that our students took part, led by our Art teachers Ms. DiIorio and Mrs. Stones.
