The theme of the 2022 Lifting Up Westchester essay contest was “What Role Does Housing Play in Influencing Our Future?”
We are proud to share that Isabella Vembenil ’25 was awarded second place in the 9th and 10th grade category. In her essay, Isabella noted that, “Homes are more than places of shelter; they have a strong effect on various aspects of our lives. Housing is a social determinant of health as housing quality and safety can significantly impact health.”
Kendal Mangum ’26 was awarded 2nd place in the 7th and 8th grade category. Kendal wrote, “Housing is much more than a comfy quilt and a fluffy pillow. It is about implementing a sense of comfort and haven for those in need. However, people tend to confuse improper housing and homelessness as the same thing when in reality, these two battles need to be fought with different tactics.”
We congratulate Isabella and Kendal on their outstanding essays on the complexities of housing and how communities can help alleviate homelessness.
