October 11 was declared The International Day of the Girl by resolution of the United Nations General Assembly in 2011. It is a day celebrated annually to recognize the rights of girls around the world and amplify their voices.
The theme this year is “My voice, our equal future.” It reimagines a better world influenced by the aspirations of adolescent girls and solutions that lead to gender equality.
Ursuline seniors and Women for Women International club members Hailey Dorsainvil '21 and Kira Schaefer '21 participated in a virtual town hall on October 9, 2020 as part of the UN’s observance of this day.
Since Kira and Hailey are in two different cohorts, Kira joined online from our campus and Hailey joined online from her home.
Discussions offered girls all around the world the chance to explore topics such as menstrual equity, climate change, domestic violence, and the impact COVID has had on women. Participants shared how they have been taking action to affect their communities.
Hailey and Kira remarked, "It is important to realize that as women we all have a duty to educate ourselves and better these issues around the world. It was so empowering to hear the stories of the girls from around the world (most even younger than us!) who were able to make such a significant impact both in their communities and beyond. We hope to bring some of what we learned today back to Ursuline, especially through the Women for Women International club!"
