We proudly congratulate student-athlete Prizila Negrete ’23 on several honors and accomplishments earned this month. She truly embodies the core values of an Ursuline education.
On January 5, 2023, Prizila was named the Con Edison Scholar Athlete of the Week. This distinctive honor recognizes excellence in sports, academics and community service. The Athlete of the Week winners are selected by an impartial panel of athletic directors and coaches.
The very next day, Prizila received the Leaders of Tomorrow Award at the U.S. Air Force Hispanic Games at The Armory. A standout in the field events, Prizila was recognized for her exceptional leadership and character in the classroom and in the community.
Prizila competes primarily in the weight throw and the shot put. In the weight throw, she is presently ranked #2 in New York State and #8 in the USA. In the shot put, she is #5 in New York State.
She dominates throwing events and, this season to date, she has not lost to anyone from Westchester County!
Prizila, who holds dual citizenship in the U.S. and Honduras, also owns the Honduran Under 18 National Record. She continues to break her own record.
On January 11, 2023, she won the Girls High School Weight Throw at the Millrose Games Trials and advanced to the prestigious 115th Millrose Games scheduled for February 11.
Last spring she broke the Honduran Under 18 National Record in the discus. She was also able to train in the Honduran Olympic Stadium this past summer.
Prizila’s achievements this season are not surprising, given her successes in prior seasons. Prizila was selected to the All County First Team Indoor Season 2019, Indoor Season 2020, Outdoor Season 2021, Indoor season 2021 and Outdoor season 2022 by the coaches in Section 1 athletics.
Prizila won the Ursuline Winter Track MVP 3 times (2020, 2021, and 2022). A versatile athlete, she won the Westchester County discus, javelin, and shot put championship in spring 2022 and took third in the hammer throw, scoring 36 points to contribute to Ursuline’s first ever County Championship.
Prizila is a high achiever academically and devotes time to community service. She has earned membership in the National Honor Society and the National English Honor Society. At Ursuline, Prizila is the treasurer of the Spanish Club and is a Peer Mediator. She helps at the weekly food drives, collecting, packing, and distributing food to a local food pantry.
Prizila also volunteers at her former grade school, Sacred Heart Grade School, Yonkers. She works in the computer lab and also helps out in the kindergarten classroom, teaching the young students the basics of computer programming.
