Ursuline Demonstrates Serviam

Our school demonstrated Serviam as a community recently when we collected food items at Thanksgiving 2021.  Current families as well as faculty and staff donated 325 turkeys and hams, and 360 pies, to be distributed to those in need through St. Peter’s Church and HOPE Community Services.

The damp weather did not diminish the enthusiasm of our student volunteers who greeted people, and then collected and organized the food donations.

Serviam is a value that is encouraged and taught by example throughout the years that a student attends Ursuline.  Our students are inspired to problem solve as they work together to meet the needs of others, and grow into altruistic adults.

Senior Lola ’22 has been volunteering at the Green Bronx Machine "Food for Others Garden" since 2017.  She was introduced to the project at Ursuline at our Global Symposium "Global Hunger & Food Justice." Lola appears in the BBC special "The Fight to Improve Food Security" (at 19:45 minutes)  where she shares the critical role played by the "Food for Others Garden" in the fight to improve food security in the Bronx.

Alumna Lia Tunney ’21 has been volunteering with Giving Tree Global since 6th grade.  A renovation TV show, George to the Rescue, on NBC chose Giving Tree Global for a whole pantry renovation and included Lia among the people they interviewed (at 3:39 minutes). Lia hopes the TV reporting will encourage others to volunteer in their communities.
